OVERVIEW
The project involved the construction of a new Primary Health Care Centre and a 2-storey Government Employee Housing (GEH) building situated on Mer Island in the Torres Straits.
The Primary Health Care Centre was designed to encompass consult and treatment rooms, a pharmacy, amenities, a health education room, and a separate morgue building.
Additionally, the GEH comprised 3 modern apartments featuring kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms tailored to accommodate the site medical staff.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Difficulties: Significant challenges arose due to the remote location of the project site, posing logistical hurdles in transportation and accommodation arrangements. Overcoming these obstacles necessitated comprehensive planning and effective coordination. Addressing the logistics of transporting personnel and materials to and from the island, arranging suitable accommodation for the construction team, and fostering effective communication with the local community proved to be demanding tasks throughout the project’s lifecycle which was successfully navigated.
- Outcomes: Despite the inherent difficulties, the project delivered a state-of-the-art medical facility capable of meeting the diverse healthcare needs of the community on Mer Island. The completion of the Government Employee Housing provided comfortable and functional living spaces for the site medical staff, enhancing their overall experience. Furthermore, the project concluded with a satisfied client and established positive relationships with the local community, underscoring the project’s success and lasting impact beyond its completion.
