OVERVIEW
Mossman Hospital is the last remaining Spanish Mission style hospital in Australia and is a heritage listed building.
WIP was tasked with delivering a full HVAC and hydraulic services upgrade of the hospital and an extension and refurbishment to the existing emergency department.
Due to the age of the building and having to keep the hospital operational 24/7, WIP were faced with many unique challenges throughout the construction period.
The build included a HVAC and Hydraulic upgrade, an emergency department refurbishment and extension, new clinical patient areas, resuscitation bays, ambulance covered area and a renewed entrance.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- The project required strict controls between hospital operations and construction activities as the emergency department needed to remain operational throughout. This required high levels of coordination between the contractor and client.
- As the hospital was a heritage listed project, the contractor and sub contractors had to remain faithful to the building’s historical significance.
- The services throughout the buildings required a wholesale renewal as the hospital was converted to a central chiller plant for the HVAC system. This involved many difficulties running new services throughout a 100 year old building.
- As with all projects in the tropical far north, the contractor had to time critical construction activities to navigate through difficult wet seasons.
